The Daily YouTube
THE DAILY YOUTUBE PLAYLIST NO LONGER FUNCTIONS DUE TO CHANGES IN YOUTUBE'S DIRECT MEDIA LINKING. This iwll not be followed up by Trollsilm, as RSS-feeds from YouTube are sufficient to keep up with your YouTube Subscriptions. Others are more than welcome to modify parts of the script to make it work again.
The Daily YouTube script addresses three problems I found with YouTube subscriptions:
- Not all subscriptions make it through in the subscription e-mail. There are videos I miss because of this.
- If there is a lot to catch up with for one subscription, I'd like to see only 3 per day, not all at the same time.
- Clicking on each link in the e-mail subscription update is awkward. I want an automated TV-like system.
- Even though I can go to the web site and create a playlist from my subscription list for automated TV-like playback, this is click-consuming, and it is still easy to miss important videos in my subscription list.
- Flash doesn't support overlays, and so I don't get my cinematic view that my computer broadcasts to my TV.
The script goes through my list of subscriptions. For each subscription, it picks the three oldest videos that I still haven't seen, find the streaming ULRs and add them to the playlist. With the Windows Essential Codec Pack installed, I can watch these Flash media streams in Windows Media Player. So I can just start the playlist, sit down in front of my TV and enjoy.
Download
You need is this script file: youtube.sh
And on your Windows box, you also need Windows Essential Codec Pack
Configuration
In the directory where you run the script, keep a file called subscriptions.txt. In this file, each line should be the user name you'd like to be subscribed to, for example runawaybox, TheHill88, utnow, TheReceptionist, MondoMedia, AericWinter, etc.
Make sure you have a file called seen.txt, even though it should be only 0 bytes to begin with. This file will eventually keep track of all videos that have been in all your previous playlists and avoid repetition.
...and that's it! Happy YouTubing!
